Letter from the chair

dear friends,

We hope this message finds you well. We want to share an exciting opportunity with you, as valued supporters of the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion, to help preserve and enhance one of New Hampshire’s most treasured historic landmarks.

Perched above Little Harbor, the 37-room Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion—once home to New Hampshire’s first royal governor, Benning Wentworth—is a rare and remarkable example of colonial architecture. As one of the few surviving residences of a colonial Royal Governor in the United States, and a designated National Historic Landmark, the Mansion offers a vivid glimpse into Portsmouth’s political and social life in the 1700s.

Our Association works with the Bureau of Historic Sites and the state’s Wentworth-Coolidge Commission to preserve this historic site. Over the past few years we have assisted with projects such as improving the dehumidification systems, installation of new windows and UV protective shades throughout the Mansion, and events highlighting the history and contributions to the Portsmouth area.

This year, we’re turning our attention to a key initiative: improving interior lighting to ensure all visitors can fully experience the grandeur of this space. We also plan to assist with interior painting of the public rooms and other preservation efforts that will keep the Mansion vibrant and welcoming for generations to come. Your support will help us create an authentic and welcoming experience for everyone who visits.

We invite you to join us in this mission. Any gift, big or small, will make a meaningful difference. The Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion Association is a 501(c)(3) organization and your donation is tax-deductible.

Thank you for considering a donation to support our efforts. Together, we can ensure that the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion remains a treasured part of our heritage for generations to come.

Warm regards,

Elizabeth Aykroyd, Chair
