On Tuesday bells will ring across Portsmouth and Kittery in celebration of the signing of the Portsmouth Treaty in 1905, which ended the Russo-Japanese War (and for which Theodore Roosevelt earned the Nobel Peace Prize). Every year on September 5, bells in Portsmouth and Kittery are rung at 3:47 PM, the time when the treaty was signed. Since the Coolidges entertained the delegates to tea during the negotiations, it seems fitting that ring bells here at the Mansion. Come out and join us on the Mansion grounds, gathering at 3:30pm. Bring your own bell or pick up one from us and be part of this historic event during Portsmouth’s 400th Anniversary year!
